TO "GREY"
Your Cavendish Watson teak outdoor furniture
can be left outside to weather naturally. The
quality of teak is such that it can be left completely
untreated and will slowly age to a silvery gray
color without significant deterioration. If due
to environmental influences, the weathered surface
becomes patchy or mottled, a good scrub with warm
soapy water will even up the color. This cleaning
process is very simple if you ensure the teak
is very wet before the start.
Extension tables need some special attention.
When they are new, it is a good idea to open the
extension for long periods so that the inner leaves
can weather at the same rate as the table top.
The runners of the extension leaves need to be
cleaned from time to time. Open the table and
use a hose to spray out accumulated grime form
the runners and rails of the extension section.
After long periods of rain, the timber can swell
and extensions may be difficult to move. This
is quite normal, and once they have dried, they
will move freely again.
Be aware that, after some years, teak outdoor
furniture that has been left to weather naturally
takes on the appearance that is rustic. This aged
character suits any type of garden setting and
is popular with many people because it is virtually
maintenance free option.
OR NOT TO "GREY"
If you prefer your furniture to retain its woody
color and to have what might be termed a more
cared for appearance, it is necessary to apply
teak oil to prevent the weathering process. IMPORTANT:
Never apply any finish or oil to the runners of
an extension table!!!
Leave your furniture outside in the weather for
about 4 weeks. If it doesn 't rain during this
time, or if your setting is in a protected position,
hose it down thoroughly twice a week. This will
wash the oil and dust out of the surface of the
timber and opens the grain so that the finish
can penetrate the pores of the wood. Be sure the
furniture is absolutely dry before proceeding
to the next step.
Apply one coat of teak oil. The weathering process
will now be stopped, but the natural oils in the
timber can continue to escape. This is important
due to the high oil content of teak wood. It is
not advisory to seal your teak in any way, as
the oils need to breath and escape from the wood.
After applying the first coat, leave for another
4-5 weeks before applying up to three coats. Be
sure to let dry overnight between each coat. Always
apply teak oil under covers, as rain or morning
dew can adversely affect the application.
Maintain your finish yearly with 1-2 coats of
teak oil. Be sure that furniture is clean and
dry before application. |
